1) The story of Hanukkah begins in a time when Jews lived alongside people of other religions, just like today. Some of the Jews wanted to be more like the other people, and some of them wanted to be more different. Do you think it’s better to be more like other people or more different from other people? 2) In the Hanukkah story, the Jewish people are not allowed to do some especially Jewish things, even if they wanted to and even if those Jewish things were important to them. They became sad and angry. When someone tells you that you can’t do something that you think is important to do, do you feel more sad or more angry? 3) One of the heroes of the Hanukkah story is Judah Maccabee, who fought along with other people so they could be Jewish the way they wanted to be Jewish. Do you think Judah Maccabee is a hero because he was especially brave on his own or because he joined together with others? 4) In the Hanukkah stories, the ancient Temple where Jews used to come together was totally wrecked inside, and the menorah lamp that was supposed to burn all the time had been put out. They found a small jar of oil that should have lasted only one day, but it lasted for eight days. Do you think they were surprised that the oil burned for so long or that they had faith that the little bit would last a long time? 5) Because of the oil in the story, we eat foods on Hanukkah that are fried in oil. Do you like latkes (potato pancakes) or sufganiyot (filled doughnuts) more? 6) In the Northern Hemisphere, Hanukkah always takes place in the coldest and darkest part of the year. Do you think the Hanukkah candles are more important because they give warmth or because they give light? 7) One thing we do on Hanukkah, especially in America, is give and receive presents. Do you like giving gifts or receiving gifts more? 8) The stories of Hanukkah have lots of layers, and new details get added as more and more people tell them over the centuries. Do you think Jewish stories are important because they are more or less the same for a long time, or because we continue to add our own ideas even today?
