Set up environment as “3 rdteacher” to support children’s positive behaviors (such as cleaning up)., Lack of emotional regulation which leads to poor impulse control and an inability to identify and talk about “big feelings”. - Model and demonstrate calm. Use Reflective Listening. Encourage problem solving. Allow and support children to work with uninterrupted focus. Use (ABCD) Ask Brainstorm Choose Decide approach if conflict resolution is needed., Lack of understanding and perspective taking: child doesn’t know why behavior is inappropriate. Child doesn’t understand her behavior may bother others. - Teach the child replacement behaviors that meet the need for attention and belonging. Use Redirection & Distraction with toddlers; Limited Choices and I Messages with older children. Set limits without shaming/ blaming child. Use a related consequence only as a last resort., Mis-learning from models or inappropriate reinforcement - Model desirable behavior (asking instead of grabbing, talking instead of shouting) and encourage positive behaviors with encouragement (Penny Transfer strategy)., Unmet emotional needs for appropriate attention and positive ways to exercise power. - Use reflective listening to support child in identifying feelings. Do not lecture. Mirror child’s feelings. Talk about feelings, not behaviors! Support child in problem solving rather than fix the problem for the child., Serious problems that present danger to child or self. - Intervene immediately. Make sure environment supports child’s ability to work on self-regulation daily. Seek support to implement guidance.,
