biomolecules - Organic macromolecules which combine to form living organisms; includes carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids., atom - The smallest WHOLE unit of matter. It is made of smaller particles such as neutrons, electrons, and protons., molecule - Two or more atoms bonded together. These come together to form the parts of many living and non-living things., macromolecule - A very large molecule composed of many atoms. They can be organic or inorganic., protein - Made from chains of amino acids that combine to form many different kinds with their own particular job., The 4 types of biomolecules - carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, lipids - fats, oils, waxes, amino acids - Long chains of smaller molecules that make up proteins. There are 20 different kinds. Made by DNA/RNA., carbohydrates - Formed from sugars and starches which the body breaks down into glucose which creates energy needed to live., nucleic acids - DNA and RNA. They create the code for life (traits, heredity, type of organism) AND create the amino acids that come together to form proteins., element - A pure substance made of only one kind of atom., organic compounds - Compounds/molecules that contain carbon and hydrogen bonded together...along with other elements., inorganic compounds - Compounds that do not contain carbon and hydrogen atoms bound to one another., compound - A molecule made of two or more DIFFERENT kinds of atoms/elements., Protein Jobs and functions - Structure and support for our cells, allow the body to move, helps protect us from diseases, help carry nutrients around our bodies, help in chemical reactions like breaking up and digesting our food so it can be used by cells., Nucleic acid jobs and functions - Contain hereditary information and contain instructions on how to make proteins., Lipid jobs and functions - Form cell membranes and store long-term energy., Carbohydrates jobs and functions - QUICK ENERGY. Also helps the nervous system, muscles, and body to function. Create cellulose in plants.,
