Lee evacuates Petersburg and tries to meet Johnson to continue fighting. However, Grant surrounds what's left of Lee's army at ____. Lee surrenders on April 9, 1865. Lincoln gives a victory speech and talks about black voting rights. John Wilkes Booth is in the crowd and is furious. On April 14, 1865, at ____, Booth assassinates Lincoln, who dies the next morning. When Lincoln dies, the hope for an easier reunification between North and South dies too. The American Civil War preserves the Union and ends slavery forever in our country. The 14th and 15th Amendments will give black individuals the rights of citizenship and voting.
