Nasal Cavity - The nose consists of the external nose (visible) and internal cavity. As we breath, air enters through the two nostrils. Hairs in the cavity filter dust and pollen. Mucus secretes antibacterial enzymes, trapping bacteria and debris, preventing them entering the body., Epiglottis - Flap of muscle covering the wind pipe. When shut it prevents food going down the wrong passage., Pharynx - (Throat) Located at the back of the nasal cavity and connects the throat and mouth to the larynx and oesophagus. This is around 10cm in length and is a passageway for food + air. Surrounded my skeletal muscle. , Larynx - (Voice box) Roughly 5cm long made up of cartilage. Located between the pharynx and trachea. Its functions are to provide an open airway, direct food and air to the correct passage and voice production. , Trachea - (Windpipe) This connects the pharynx and larynx to the lungs. This splits into two bronchi at the lungs. 12cm long and 2cm in diameter. Very flexible. , Left and Right Bronchus - These rapidly carry oxygen into the lungs and carbon dioxide out. The right bronchus is wider, shorter and more verticle than the left. At this point air is warm, clear and saturated with water vapour. , Bronchioles - The bronchus divide up into passageways smaller than 1mm in diameter. These function to pass oxygen to the alveoli (air sacs).,
