'well-made, smooth-faced... something of a slyish cast' - Dr Jekyll's appearance suggests that he represents many Victorian gentlemen, as he hides a secret double life behind a perfect exterior., ‘the thought…braced and delighted me like wine.. I felt younger, lighter happier' - Dr Jekyll at first feels a sense of freedom when he turns into Hyde, but, like drinking alcohol, it will make him lose control of himself., ‘sold a slave to my original evil’ - As the novella progresses, Dr Jekyll can no longer control his sinful side- it is now controlling him., 'like some disconsolate prisoner' - When Utterson and Enfield see Jekyll at the barred window of his house, he seems to have lost his freedom as he is a prisoner of Hyde- he now transforms spontaneously., 'Man is not truly one, but truly two.' - Dr Jekyll represents the theme of duality - the idea that all beings have two sides to their nature., 'My devil had been long caged, he came out roaring' - Dr Jekyll shows the dangers of, firstly, repressing all of one’s impulses in a very strict society, and then letting them loose like a wild animal, with no control., ‘a great air of wealth and comfort’ vs ‘sinister block of building …prolonged and sordid negligence.’ - Dr Jekyll's house represents his dual nature, as the public side is wealthy and respectable, but the hidden back part is neglected and sinister-looking., 'transcendental science' - Dr Jekyll believes that he can push the boundaries of science, and use it to change human nature; many Victorians would see this as 'playing God', and therefore wrong., 'apelike fury' - As Hyde, Dr Jekyll can release his dark, savage, animalistic impulses., 'younger, lighter, happier' - When he first turns into Hyde, Jekyll feels young, happy and light because he is no longer weighed down by social pressures and his conscience., 'clubbed him to the earth' - Dr Jekyll lets his dark, savage side loose, and it gets out of control, turning him into a less evolved person, like a caveman., 'trampled calmly' - When he is Hyde, Dr Jekyll can do terrible things to other people without feeling guilt.,
