Cataracts can form. Prevented by health testing and selective breeding. Can occur in any breed but commonly seen in: Miniature & Toy Poodles, Cocker Spaniels, Labrador Retrievers. a) Cushing's Disease b) Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) c) Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) d) Alopecia 4) Can occur due to age, disease, injury, or be congenital (present from birth). Can affect any breed at any age. a) Epilepsy b) Cushing's Disease c) Blindness d) Umbilical Hernia 5) Genetic / inherited condition. Occurs due to a tear gland in the dog’s third eyelid becoming inflamed. Does not cause pain but can be itchy. Should not breed from dogs with this condition. Can occur in any breed but commonly seen in: Beagles, British Bulldogs, Bull Mastiffs, Cocker Spaniels, French Bulldogs, Great Danes, Shar Pei’s. a) Cataracts b) Proptosis c) Cherry Eye d) Luxating Patella 6) Cannot be prevented. Caused by high levels of cortisol in the body, possibly due to tumour on the adrenal gland. Can affect any breed at any age. a) Cushing's Disease b) Proptosis c) Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) d) Umbilical Hernia 7) Unable to produce enough insulin. Can lead to death without treatment. Can affect any breed at any age. a) Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) b) Achondroplasia c) Diabetes d) Umbilical Hernia 8) Can be a cause of seizures. Can be inherited. Cannot be cured but can be managed with medication. Can affect any breed at any age, but some breeds have a higher rate of development. a) Proptosis b) Gastric Torsion / Gastric Dilatation Volvulus c) Cushing's Disease d) Epilepsy 9) Also known as eye prolapse. May be a result of trauma / accident / incorrect handling. Can result in blindness. Can affect any breed at any age but more likely in brachycephalic breeds. a) Proptosis b) Cherry Eye c) Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) d) Umbilical Hernia 10) Congenital condition. Caused by incomplete closure of the umbilical ring after birth. Can be repaired with surgery. Should not breed from dogs with this condition. Can affect any breed. a) Umbilical Hernia b) Diabetes c) Hip / Elbow Dysplasia d) Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) 11) Also known as ‘dwarfism’ or short limbs. Seen as a desirable trait in some dog breeds. When presented as an abnormality = bones fail to grow to their normal size. Commonly seen in: Basset Hounds, Dachshunds, Shih Tzus as desirable trait. a) Achondroplasia b) Cushing's Disease c) Cataracts d) Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) 12) Upper airway tract obstruction due to skull shape. Can cause respiratory distress & other health issues. a) Gastric Torsion / Gastric Dilatation Volvulus b) Diabetes c) Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) d) Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) 13) Also known as ‘bloat’. Life threatening condition; can cause the dog to go into shock or die due to reduced blood flow. Commonly seen in deep-chested, large breeds, e.g., Great Dane, Standard Poodle. a) Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) b) Epilepsy c) Gastric Torsion / Gastric Dilatation Volvulus d) Hip / Elbow Dysplasia 14) Musculoskeletal disorders. Deformity of the hip / elbow. Commonly seen in large breeds, e.g., German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers a) Achondroplasia b) Hip / Elbow Dysplasia c) Cataracts d) Gastric Torsion / Gastric Dilatation Volvulus 15) Also known as ‘floating kneecap’, or ‘trick knee’. Musculoskeletal disorder.
