Students are “empty vessels" and it is the teacher’s responsibility to fill it with valuable information. - Students usually need to process information in meaningful ways (thinking, organizing, relating to prior knowledge) in order to get it into long-term memory , The older 3-box-model of memory is an accurate description of how information moves from short term to long term memory and should be used as a guide for teachers. - There are many factors that contribute to information getting into long term memory, such as practice, prior knowledge, strong emotions and the novelty of an idea., Technology rewires the brain - There is no conclusive evidence for this. In fact any type of learning has the ability to rewire the brain because of neuroplasticity, but this is not necessarily negative. However, it can also mean that we do not use our brains in certain ways as much (Ex. remembering phone #s). We haven’t lost the ability to do that but we simply don’t do it as much., Technology negatively impacts our cognitive abilities - Technology actually has the ability to free up space in our brains so that we can do other tasks (ex. Excel spreadsheets allow us to work with much more data and use it in new ways)., There has never been a panic about technology like the ones we are facing now. - History shows that the public has always had skepticism about new technology. This can create a ‘moral panic’ which we saw in the past with books, radio, TV, etc. , The brain is like a digital recording device which we should be able to access at any time. - There are many factors which determine whether something gets encoded into long term memory and our memories are associative and require cues and links to be activated., Forgetting is a failure of the memory system. - Forgetting is actually a natural process that we go through to focus on remembering what is really important for us. When things relate to our lives, are distinctive, are meaningful/organized, connect to prior knowledge and/or emotions, and used on a regular basis, they are more likely to be remembered.,
